Seeking Success in Midlife

Many people arrive at midlife to find things are not as they want them to be. You don’t have to accept the situation. Take deliberate steps to make lasting changes in your life.

Define What Success Means to You
You’re clear and what it is you don’t want; something about your current situation. Now, it’s time to take steps towards that which you do want. Get clear on what it is you want to add or remove from your life. Picture it clearly. Visualization is important for the achievement of any goal.

Transform Struggles into Success
Life is hard. People in the midyears of their life know this better than most. Accept this and you’re half way to easier times. Successful people find a way to use their struggles to better their lives. The first step is to acknowledge the situation. Look for the positives that can come out of them and then build on that.

Create Your Plan
How do you eat an elephant? The answer to this age old adage applies directly to creating a plan for making the changes you want in your life. Start with the end in mind (think Covey) and then work backwards. Use the SMART forms provided to you after subscribing to the Personal Best Newsletter to create plans for your goals.

Create Motivation for your Goal
On a 3x5 card, create a list what you will have when you achieve your goal. Whenever discouragement or trials occur, as they more surely will, review your list. Review your list regularly, even when not discouraged. Focusing on your why, is a proven tactic for helping you achieve whatever it is you want to achieve.

Build a Circle of Support for Your Path
Identify people in your life that will help you in your goals. Friends in the community, church patrons and civic group members are all sources of individuals who are likely to support you in your efforts. Counsel with these people regarding the steps you will take. As you take them, report your progress. If things are going as you like, ask their opinion for what should be done differently. Knowing you’re never alone along your path can dramatically increase your chances of success.

Follow Your Plan, Step by Step Until You Arrive at Your Goal
Not additional words needed here. You’re an adult now. You know what you need to do, now do it. Every action you take towards your goals is a step closer to completing it.
